Tour of Oman

Oman’s mountains lie in the north and south of the country and were created by great upheavals in the earths crust around 30 to 40 million years ago. In Oman’s northern mountains the highest peaks are composed of the hardest sedimentary rocks. In the Jebel Akhdar range these are very dense limestone in thick beds. The jagged forms of all Oman’s mountains reflect the processes of erosion that have slowly attacked them since their creation. Below the mountains there are wadi beds where you will see huge boulders, suggesting that Oman was once a lot wetter than it is now and that torrential rain caused the springs to discharge a stronger flow of water to move these.Several major wadis drain Al Jebel al Akhdar: Wadis bani Awf, Sahtan and bani Kharus north to Al Batinah, and Wadi Ghul to the south. mountain biking

The way of life remains traditional with scattered communities growing date palms and fodder crops fed by groundwater and springs. In the more sheltered areas, a variety of tree crops are grown, such as almonds, walnuts, apricots, peaches, figs and pomegranates. Stunning scenery, great cycling, and the friendliness of the local people make this an unforgettable experience.

If you love fast cross-country and like to test yourself on back-country trails, this is the ideal ride for you. Although we are able to bike almost the entire route, there will be some short steep climbs, or sections of stepped pathway, where you will have to carry or push your mountain bike. Generally, the riding conditions are excellent, on broad paths and sometimes on rough jeep roads. There are, however, some sections of technically demanding single and doubletrack, some tough climbs and some exciting descents. We must stress that apart from the emergency tool kit that you would take on any day ride, you will not be required to carry any luggage. Altitude is not generally a problem as the biking is mainly below the 2000 metre/6600 foot mark. The support vehicle cannot generally follow the bikes. Average 40 km/25 miles per day.

2 nights hotels and lodges; 5 nights camping; 6 days CHALLENGING biking; 350 km/218 miles 75% off-road; 25% vehicle supported; max. altitude 2250m/7382ft. All meals included.

Travel deep into the Hajar Mountains on remote trails through traditional Omani villages where the locals show true Omani hospitality and provide a welcome resting place with platters of fresh fruit grown on the green plateaus of the mountain range which reaches some 3000m. Stunning single track, challenging terrain, beautiful scenery and seldom visited villages, that’s what this holiday is all about. This is pure  Omani mountain biking at its very best.
