A three day/two night family-friendly tour starting in the desert & then crossing the Northern Hajar Mountains of Oman, climbing to 3,009m above sea level. The trip will concentrate on getting a feel for the culture and traditions of the local mountain people, Jebalis, & exploring the more mountainous area of Oman. The tour includes off-road travel through sand dunes, dry and wet wadis and challenging mountain tracks, camping out at night under the star filled sky. There will be the opportunity to meet the Jebalis, who are renowned for their hospitality, & walk through their idyllic villages (abandoned and working). Up to a third of each day will be spent on car travel and the remainder on exploring, photographing and enjoying the break from city life. All food, drink, camping equipment and guided tours of each area is included. All you need to provide is your own 4x4 & personal effects.
Day 1 - Arrival in Oman and Desert Camp
You will be met on the main highway from Hatta/Sohar to Muscat, approx 2 ½ hrs from the border post, and led off road through camel country to a desert camp. Daylight permitting, there will be the chance to try some dune driving & exploration of the sandy environs followed by cold drinks, bbq dinner & a camp fire before retiring to bed under the stars.
Day 2 - Desert, Wadi and Mountain Trip
After an al fresco breakfast head off over the dunes for some wet wadi bashing and a swim. Then on through picturesque villages & date plantations to the base of the Northern Hajar Mountains. Follow a winding track up the mountains with plenty of photo stops to arrive at a Jebeles village for a traditional Omani mid day meal. Continue to climb steeply off road through dramatic mountain scenery eventually reaching Camp 2 at 3500m. Plenty of time for exploring around the camp and enjoying the fresh mountain air before settling down to well earned sundowners and an evening meal. Early night for the little ones. Star gazing and entertainment for those that still have the energy.
Day 3 - Cultural trip

Day 2 -Nizwa, Bahla & Jabreen

Your guided tour begins with a drive through the magnificent Hajar Mountains via Fanja, Sumail and Izki, stopping at the old town and pretty village of Birkat Al Mauz, situated at the foothills of Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain). Enjoy a walk through its oasis and dense date plantations. From here you continue your tour to the township of Nizwa, the ancient capital of Oman. Nizwa contains clusters of historical buildings, a traditional Souk and the imposing circular-towered fort built during the mid 17th century by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Yar’ubi. The town has a lush palm plantation stretching for 8km along two wadis. Water canals run through all parts of the Nizwa area. The most important one is Falaj Daris, formed by two streams, which irrigates a large part of the town.

At the Souk, built in traditional style, you will find exquisite silver jewellery, intricately hand-made “Khanjars” (daggers), copper, weaving and other handicrafts. Following a sumptuous local lunch at Nizwa, you travel to the village of Bahla with its rich tradition of pottery and weaving. Bahla is a delightful town having retained its traditional characteristics and is surrounded by a 12km long protective wall, much of which still stands. You visit the famous Pottery Centre and Bahla Fort, one of the oldest in Oman, built in the late 17th century on much earlier Persian foundations and now a UNESCO Heritage Site. You will then visit Jabrin Fort, built in the late 17th century and originally designed as a residence. It displays the highest achievement in Omani ceiling painting and beautifully executed woodcarvings.

Day 3 - Wadi Bani Khalid & Turtle Beach Resort
Experience Wadi Bani Khalid, the town of Sur, overnight at the Turtle Beach Resort. Following a sumptuous breakfast your journey continues to Wadi Bani Khalid, nestled deep in the mountains and one of the largest and most picturesque wadis in Oman. Water cascades down the gorge forming cool blue-green pools fed by underground streams flowing from within the surrounding limestone hills. Perennial flowing streams of spring water are carried along the falaj clinging precariously to the rugged terrain to support local villages.  Enjoy a gentle walk along the riverbed and cool down in the crystal clear waters of the rock pools.

You continue the journey to Sur, an ancient port and seafaring town which once played a major part in the trade between Oman, East Africa and India. It started its trading activities with the African coast as early as the 6th century. A walk through its labyrinth of streets reveals many fine old houses with carved wooden doors and arabesque windows. The fishing dhows in the harbour make a splendid sight. Separated from Sur by the bay is
the village of Al Ayja, well fortified by watchtowers and forts. On the sheltered lagoon is the traditional Dhow Building Yard where craftsmen today still build dhows following traditional designs without the aid of drawings.

Your final destination for the evening is Ras al Jinz located on the edge of the coast. Here you will spend your first night under the stars listening to the sounds of the Arabian Sea. Your camping experience will include a guided walk along the sand where you can see giant green turtles laying or hatching under the light of the moon.
Day 4 - Scenic Coastal Drive
Return to Muscat via the scenic coastal road, overnight The Gulf Leisure Guest House, Muscat. Take an exhilarating drive along the stunning coastal road which runs from Sur to the town of Quriyat. Take a short hike (optional) to the top of Wadi Shab, which lies in a ravine which is lush with trees, grasses and date palms. A single beach dotted with fishing boats at the mouth of the wadi completes the picturesque view. After an exhilarating hike, cool off on White Beach in the azure waters of the Arabian Sea. Once refreshed you travel to the coastal village of Tiwi before commencing your return journey towards the quaint fishing village of Quriyat which has areas of outstanding natural beauty and is an ideal spot for bird watching. Like other ports it came under Portuguese rule during the 16th century. Finally, you are on black top road again and you drive through the foothills of the Eastern Hajar Mountains through dramatic scenery before being taken back to the guesthouse.
